Porsche 911 GT3 RS: 991 vs 992: Which Is the Better Driver's Car?

The GT3 RS is Porsche's most extreme road-legal 911. Track focused to the point of obsession, aerodynamically developed beyond anything a production car had previously attempted, and priced accordingly. The 991 generation established the formula. The 992 took it somewhere its predecessor could not go. This is how the two cars differ, what each one gets right, and which one belongs on your wall.


What the GT3 RS actually is

The GT3 RS sits above the GT3 in Porsche's performance hierarchy and below the GT2 RS, which uses a turbocharged engine. The RS designation has always signalled the most track-focused version of the GT3: lighter, more aerodynamically extreme, more demanding to drive at the limit. Both the 991 and 992 versions use naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engines derived directly from Porsche's motorsport programme. Both rev to 9,000 rpm. Both are available only with the seven-speed PDK gearbox. There is no manual option on either RS.

The GT3, by contrast, offers a manual. The RS does not. The PDK is faster, and the RS is built around lap times rather than driving purity. That is the clearest statement of intent Porsche makes about what the car is for.


The 991 GT3 RS

The 991.2 GT3 RS arrived in 2018 as the final evolution of the 991-generation 911. The 4.0-litre engine produced 520 horsepower at 8,250 rpm, the same unit that powered the GT3 Cup racing car. The 0-100 km/h time was 3.0 seconds. The top speed was 312 km/h.

What made the 991.2 RS notable was the aerodynamic package for its era. Wide body panels accommodating a 44mm wider rear track than the standard 911. A fixed rear wing with manually adjustable elements. Front downforce generated by a combination of the fixed splitter and active aerodynamic flaps in the front bumper. Maximum downforce: around 200 kg at the car's governed top speed.

On track the 991.2 RS earned a reputation as one of the most communicative and rewarding Porsches ever built. The front end provided exceptional feedback. The rear was predictable at the limit in a way that allowed confident exploration. Engineers and journalists who drove both the 991.2 RS and the subsequent 992 GT3 regularly described the older car as more tactile, more analogue, more connected to the driver through the controls.

The 991.2 RS lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:56.4. When it was launched, that number represented the state of the art for a road-legal Porsche.


The 992 GT3 RS

The 992 GT3 RS arrived in 2023 and immediately made the 991's aerodynamic package look conservative. Porsche spent 250 hours in the wind tunnel developing it. The result was a car that generates 409 kg of downforce at 200 km/h, more than any production car in history at the time of its launch. At 285 km/h, total downforce reaches 860 kg.

The engine produces 525 horsepower, up 5 horsepower from the 991.2, but the performance gains come primarily from the aerodynamic package rather than the engine. The 0-100 km/h time is 3.2 seconds, marginally slower than the 991.2 because the additional downforce increases weight. But on a circuit, the additional grip translates directly into cornering speed and braking performance that the 991.2 cannot match.

The Nürburgring lap time tells the story. The 992 GT3 RS set a 6:44.848 on the Nordschleife, over 11 seconds faster than the 991.2 RS. More strikingly, it lapped faster than the 991-generation GT2 RS, which had a turbocharged 700-horsepower engine. The 992 GT3 RS achieved a faster time with 175 fewer horsepower purely through aerodynamic efficiency.

The exterior is shaped entirely by function. The large fixed rear wing, the prominent front splitter, the vertical vanes around the front wheel arches that channel airflow to reduce lift. Every element has a measurable aerodynamic purpose. Porsche eliminated the flush door handles of the GT3 in favour of conventional units, saving weight. The interior retains an analogue tachometer alongside digital screens, a deliberate choice that preserves some connection to the car's mechanical nature.


The honest comparison

The numbers favour the 992 without ambiguity. It is faster at every circuit, generates more grip, and represents a more advanced piece of engineering. The aerodynamic package it introduced has influenced every track-focused car that has followed it.

The driver experience, however, is more nuanced. People who have driven both cars extensively describe the 991.2 RS as easier to sense at the limit: the kind of car that communicates what it is doing through the steering and the seat in a way that allows you to build confidence progressively. The 992 RS is faster, but the additional grip and downforce create a car that operates at higher absolute speeds before the driver feels the limit approaching. It is more capable. It is not necessarily more satisfying at road-legal speeds.

The practical consideration is ownership. The 991.2 RS has depreciated significantly from its original list price and proven its long-term reliability. The 992 RS commands a premium both new and used, and is a more demanding car to drive well. For a track-day regular who wants the most capable tool, the 992. For someone who wants the most emotionally engaging experience on a mixed road and track diet, the argument for the 991.2 remains strong.


Which belongs on your wall

The 991 GT3 RS and the 992 GT3 RS are both in the Deckorate collection. Each one captures the visual character of its generation: the 991's cleaner, more restrained aero package versus the 992's dramatic wing and splitter arrangement that makes its intentions obvious from any angle.

For collectors who consider the 991 the last GT3 RS with genuine analogue character, that is the deck. For anyone whose reference point for what a road-legal Porsche can do is the 992's Nürburgring lap time, it's the other one. Some people put both on the wall.
