Why is the Porsche 935 K3 with Apple Livery so legendary?

# Porsche 935 K3 Apple Livery: The Legend Behind One of Motorsport’s Most Iconic Race Cars

If you’re passionate about classic Porsche race cars, few machines are as instantly recognizable as the Porsche 935 K3 in its iconic Apple Computer livery. With its wide Group 5 bodywork, massive rear wing, and unmistakable rainbow-striped sponsorship, the Kremer-built 935 became one of the defining endurance racers of the late 1970s.

The Porsche 935 platform was originally developed by Porsche as a turbocharged race version of the legendary 911 for FIA Group 5 competition. While the factory cars were already incredibly successful, German racing team Kremer Racing pushed the concept even further with the development of the 935 K3.

Introduced in 1979, the Kremer Porsche 935 K3 combined Porsche engineering with major aerodynamic and performance improvements developed by Kremer Racing. The result was one of the fastest and most successful customer race cars of its era.

Kremer Racing and the Porsche 935 K3

The “K3” name stood for “Kremer Type 3,” the third major evolution of the Kremer-built 935. Using extensive wind tunnel testing and lightweight body modifications, Kremer Racing created a car that was lighter, more stable at high speeds, and extremely competitive in endurance racing.

Power came from a twin-turbocharged flat-six engine producing well over 700 horsepower in race trim, depending on setup and boost levels. Combined with the car’s aggressive aerodynamics and lightweight construction, the 935 K3 became a dominant force on circuits around the world.

Victory at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans

The Porsche 935 K3 achieved legendary status after winning the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans overall. Driven by Klaus Ludwig and brothers Bill and Don Whittington, the Kremer Racing entry defeated prototype competitors and secured one of the most famous victories in endurance racing history.

The Apple Computer-sponsored livery became inseparable from the car’s identity. Featuring the colorful vintage Apple logo across the white bodywork, it remains one of the most iconic liveries ever seen at Le Mans.

Today, the Porsche 935 K3 Apple car is considered one of the most collectible and celebrated Porsche race cars ever built, admired by motorsport fans, Porsche collectors, and endurance racing enthusiasts worldwide.

The Legacy of the Porsche 935

The success of the 935 helped cement Porsche’s dominance in endurance racing throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its combination of turbocharged power, durability, and unmistakable styling turned it into a true motorsport icon.

Decades later, Porsche paid tribute to the original 935 race cars with the limited-production 2019 Porsche 935, inspired by the legendary 935/78 “Moby Dick.” While the modern tribute car features contemporary technology and performance, it captures the spirit of Porsche’s golden era of endurance racing.
