VW Golf Wall Art: Every Generation from MK1 to MK8

No car in history has sold in greater numbers than the Volkswagen Golf. Over 37 million produced across eight generations since 1974. The car that defined what a hatchback should be, that created the hot hatch category with the GTI, and that has remained the benchmark for front-wheel drive driver's cars for fifty years. The Deckorate Golf collection covers eight generations: from the original Giugiaro-designed MK1 to the MK8 GTI. This is the full story.

VW Golf MK1: where it all started

The Golf MK1 launched in 1974 as the replacement for the Beetle. And in 1976, the GTI variant arrived and created the hot hatch category entirely.

VW Golf MK2 GTI: the definitive hot hatch

The MK2 arrived in 1983 and refined everything the MK1 had established. The 16-valve variant, Kamei body kits, BBS wheels: the MK2 in modified form is one of the defining images of European car culture from the 1980s through to today.

VW Golf MK3: the overlooked generation

The MK3 introduced the VR6 engine and the legendary Harlekin: 264 cars for North America with each body panel in a different colour, now one of the most collectible Golfs ever made.

VW Golf MK4 R32: the VR6 that proved a point

The MK4's real story is the R32: a 3.2-litre VR6 producing 237 horsepower, Haldex all-wheel drive, and the world's first DSG gearbox. The last Golf to offer a naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine.

VW Golf MK5 GTI: the comeback

The MK5 was immediately praised as the best Golf GTI since the MK1. A new 2.0-litre TFSI engine, a genuinely sharp multi-link chassis, and the restoration of every classic GTI visual element: the red stripe, the tartan seats, the honeycomb grille, the golf ball gear lever.

VW Golf MK6 GTI: the sharper generation

The MK6 GTI arrived in 2008 with more angular lines, the XDS electronic differential developed with racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, and 210 horsepower. Sandwiched between the popular MK5 and the celebrated MK7, the MK6 tends to be overlooked despite being a genuinely accomplished driver's car. The Edition 35 (235 hp) and the adidas GTI (4,410 cars) are already collector's pieces.

VW Golf MK7 GTI: the benchmark refined

The MK7 GTI is widely considered the finest Golf GTI ever made. The MQB platform brought 42 kg of weight reduction, sharper steering, better ride quality and more premium interior. 220 horsepower standard, 230 in the Performance Pack.
