What Are Decorative Skateboards? Everything You Need to Know

A decorative skateboard is exactly what it sounds like: a skateboard deck designed to be displayed rather than ridden. It hangs on a wall the way a painting or print would, but with one significant difference: it has physical depth, weight, and presence that a flat print simply cannot replicate.

This article covers what decorative skateboards are, what materials they're made from, how to hang them, and why the format has become the preferred choice for car enthusiasts, motorsport fans, and anyone who wants wall art that doesn't look like everyone else's.

What makes a decorative skateboard different from a poster

A poster sits flat against a wall. A skateboard deck sits away from it. The slight concave curve of the maple construction catches light differently depending on the angle you view it from, creating a visual depth that a print on paper or canvas cannot achieve. The result is an object with genuine presence in a room rather than something that blends into the background.

It's also a more unexpected format. Anyone can hang a poster. Fewer people think to put a skateboard on their wall, which is precisely why it starts conversations that posters don't.

What materials are used for decorative skateboards

There are three main material options, and the differences matter.

Maple wood

The most common material for functional skateboards and the best choice for decorative ones. Seven-ply maple is extremely durable, holds print quality well, and develops no warping over time in normal indoor conditions. The matte finish that Deckorate uses on all decks eliminates glare under any lighting, which means the artwork looks the same whether you're photographing it or just looking at it from across the room. Maple is also the material that gives a deck its characteristic shape and structural integrity. The slight concave is a property of the wood, not a design affectation.

Bamboo

A cheaper alternative to maple. Bamboo grows faster and costs less to source, but the resulting deck is slightly less solid and less consistent in finish quality. Functional for decorative purposes, but noticeably different in hand feel and visual quality compared to maple.

Acrylic

Acrylic decks exist purely as display objects. They are too fragile to skate and offer no structural advantage over wood. The main drawback is that acrylic is reflective. Under most lighting conditions, acrylic wall art photographs poorly and picks up glare from light sources in the room. For anyone planning to photograph their space, acrylic is the wrong choice.

Deckorate uses 7-ply maple with a matte finish on every deck for exactly these reasons.

What shapes of skateboard are used for wall art

The four main skateboard shapes are popsicle, old school shaped, cruiser and longboard. For decorative purposes, the popsicle is by far the most common. It's the standard symmetrical shape most people associate with a skateboard, and its proportions work best for graphic illustration work. Deckorate uses the popsicle format across the entire collection.

How to hang a decorative skateboard

There are two clean options.

Dedicated wall mounts. Brackets designed specifically for skateboards hold the deck at the right distance from the wall and are the most secure and visually clean solution. Deckorate sells wall fixtures designed specifically for the decks in the collection.

Wall shelf with a ledge. For horizontal display, a narrow shelf with a front lip works well and makes it easy to swap decks in and out without re-drilling. Less permanent than a bracket mount but completely functional.

Can you actually skate a decorative skateboard

If it's made from maple, yes. Add grip tape, trucks and wheels and a Deckorate deck functions as a regular skateboard. That said, the print would not survive prolonged skating use. The decks are designed for walls, not streets.

What makes a good decorative skateboard

For car enthusiasts specifically, the subject matter is the most important factor. A deck featuring a car you have a genuine connection to (the model you own, the livery you grew up watching, the era that got you into the sport) is always going to have more impact on a wall than a generic automotive print. The format elevates the subject. The subject determines whether it means anything.

The Deckorate collection covers F1, rally, JDM, Porsche, DTM and classic car subjects. If the specific car you want isn't in the collection, the custom deck service covers that.
